Most manuals stop at the description. The value is in what comes after.

P0299 Turbo / Supercharger Underboost Boost

Likely causes

Boost leak · actuator or wastegate · VNT vanes sticking · diverter valve · restricted DPF

The classic VAG 2.0 TDI and BMW diesel limp code. Pressure-test before you buy anything.

Pinpoint routine

  1. Verify actual against specified boost in live data at wide-open throttle, 2000–3500 rpm.
  2. Pressure-test the charge system — smoke, or regulated air at about 1 bar with cone adapters. Boost pipes, intercooler end tanks, throttle boots and the diverter valve diaphragm are the usual leaks.
  3. Check the actuator. Vacuum type: apply vacuum, the rod must move and hold. Electronic wastegate or VNT: run the actuator test and watch the position feedback sweep.
  4. On VNT and variable-vane diesels, sticking vanes from soot make boost slow to build, then overshoot into limp. Verify with a vacuum gauge on the actuator during a road test; clean or replace the cartridge.
  5. Check for a restricted intake — collapsed pipe, blocked filter — and exhaust restriction. Measure back-pressure or DPF differential pressure.
  6. Inspect the turbo: shaft play (minimal radial, near-zero axial), oil in both housings (misting is normal, pooling is not), impeller damage.
